I read this book thinking it may be an average Vietnam Nam book. I was wrong. The author truelly made me feel as if I was in those tunnels deep in the Ho Bo woods. A very visual read. If u are into Nam books I strongly recommend reading The Black Butterfly Woman. I guaranty you will be very satisfied. Great story! I can’t wait for this author ‘Phillip Atlas Clausen’ to publish another great novel.

Much of the Vietnam War happened underground. The tunnels were a large part of the Viet Cong infastructure and made winning a conventional war impossible. The USA had to have people capable of going down. This book explores the tunnels and what makes up a person that is capable of not only doing it but doing it well. How does it affect this person? Find out in a well told story that is a good read that keeps your interest throughout.

This book grabs your heart at the beginning and never lets go. Wonderful story telling. Emotions so alive and I felt like I was right there watching Billy struggle with life and war. It is worth getting through the first few difficult chapters, as this book really opens up after its tough start. You can just about feel the tunnels closing in on you and the humble hero of the book is a character that is easy to relate to. Very enjoyable! I have gone on to buy some other books on Vietnam, as this book has just got me started.

I have known the author personally now for some six plus months and just now a week ago had it click that he was the author of this book. Of course, I had to fire up Kindle on my phone and ‘dive in.’ I love it and cannot wait until the next book from this Iowa author! Never would you think the story would take the twists and turns that it did; or touch so many areas and make you feel exactly what the main character was going through. It was definitely an “I can’t put down the phone kind of book!” Hmmm I am thinking this would be one heck of screen play! Maybe a movie???? Way to go Phil!

Insightful, intense….very deep. This is not a book to only enjoy but to make you think deeper than you normally would.
